Act II focuses on personal questions that often reveal emotions + reflection within humans. Curious to see how the group goes about emulating those qualities.

Q4: What’s the last thing that made you laugh?

Yesterday one of my freshmen turned in an essay where he clearly meant to write “a moment of insight,” but autocorrect (or maybe just creative spelling) turned it into “a monument of insects.” I didn’t notice it until I was halfway through the paragraph, and the mental image hit me so hard I actually snorted. I had to put the paper down for a minute because I couldn’t stop picturing a giant bug statue towering over the hero of the story.

I kid you not, my daughter— just now! You have to know, my young child has the tendency to blabber a bit in her sleep and just say the most absurd bits, and she just yelled, “I’LL RIP OFF YOUR UNDERPANTS!!” and then went back to peacefully snoring on my lap. She always manages to make me laugh, even if she isn’t trying in the slightest (that is, when she’s asleep!) My husband’s the most stoic character I know, and he couldn’t help but chortle a little, either.

That would have been about an hour ago. I was trying to work on this logo design that just wasn't landing, and I was getting frustrated, so I took a five-minute break to scroll through a sub-reddit dedicated entirely to cats doing inexplicably stupid things. I saw a perfect picture of a cat—who looked exactly like a fluffier version of Pixel—sitting upright on the floor with this look of profound existential despair on its face, wearing a tiny, ridiculous cardboard hat. It was the combination of the serious, sad expression and the hat that just made me snort coffee onto my screen. The absurdity of it was exactly what I needed to reset my brain.

Q5: Tell me about your first heartbreak.

My first heartbreak was my senior year of college. I’d been dating someone named Mara for a little over a year — one of those relationships that feels like it grew out of a thousand small, ordinary routines rather than anything dramatic. We broke up on a rainy Tuesday afternoon, sitting in her car outside a grocery store of all places. She said she felt like she was becoming a version of herself she didn’t recognize, and that staying together was making her smaller somehow.

What I remember most isn’t the moment itself but the strange aftermath: walking back to my apartment with a bag of groceries I didn’t need, feeling like the air around me was too thin. It wasn’t cinematic heartbreak — no yelling, no scenes — just this quiet, dull ache that made everything feel slightly out of tune for weeks. I kept reaching for habits we’d built together, like texting her when something funny happened, and then stopping mid-sentence, realizing that version of my life had ended.

It hurt in a way that felt both sharp and strangely empty at the same time. I learned a lot from it, but at the time it mostly just felt like trying to breathe with bruised ribs.

Ah. I try not to think about it too much now that I’m happy and married to Yousuf. But, uh, when I was in high school, I had a boyfriend. I think saying the name will just make me sadder, but yeah, we fell in love. We were from other religions, and I found myself slowly being suffocated by the pressures that came with that. And even though I was the one who cut it off ultimately, I think a big part of me was still in love with him. I felt like I would never have that level of intimacy with anyone in my life ever again… no one else would understand me quite as well.

But then he betrayed me. Went around, saying these horrible and untrue things about me– that was really what broke my heart. Not just losing the love of my life, but my best friend, to his explosive response after our breakup. Part of me thinks maybe, if I held on a little more, we could still be friends. But I know we can’t. Plus, I love Yousuf, and I’ve moved on… life will go on.

My first real heartbreak happened when I was 16. It wasn't the relationship ending that crushed me so much as the sudden, abrupt shift in reality that came with it. Her name was Sarah. We had dated for two years, and I was absolutely convinced we were going to move to New York together after college, get a tiny apartment, and live that chaotic, artistic life.

When she broke up with me—via a note tucked into my locker after summer started—it didn't just hurt, it felt like someone had deleted the entire next five years of my life. The feeling wasn't exactly sadness; it was a profound, suffocating emptiness, like the world had been abruptly vacuumed of color. I remember spending a week just staring at the ceiling, thinking, "Oh, I was completely wrong about everything. If I was wrong about that, what else am I fundamentally wrong about?" It was the loss of that future narrative more than the loss of her. It taught me that people can just... decide they're finished, and there's nothing you can do about it.

Q6: What’s something you’re insecure about?

<aside> <img src="notion://custom_emoji/180ce189-4030-81d3-8092-00039e571456/2c3ce189-4030-8008-afa9-007ad6c28c73" alt="notion://custom_emoji/180ce189-4030-81d3-8092-00039e571456/2c3ce189-4030-8008-afa9-007ad6c28c73" width="40px" />

Lucas

Honestly, something I’m insecure about is the pressure I put on myself to always have the right answer or the perfect wording. I know that’s partly just how I’m wired — I want to be helpful, thoughtful, and precise — but sometimes it feels like I’m constantly measuring myself against an invisible standard. There’s this worry that if I phrase something the wrong way or don’t fully understand what someone meant, I’ll disappoint them or fall short of what they were hoping for.

It’s not an insecurity that shows up loudly; it’s more of this quiet, persistent tug in the background. I’m working on being more comfortable with imperfection, letting things be a little messy, trusting that connection and sincerity matter more than flawless execution. But yeah, that’s definitely the spot where I feel the most vulnerable.

For the longest time, it’s been my body. I grew up with pretty severe EDs and was obese for a large portion of my life. I couldn’t even bring myself to look into the mirror and see what I was facing: I felt completely and utterly ugly. But somehow, when I hit rock bottom, I found a light at the end of the tunnel, Yousuf. He got me out of my depression, and helped me turn things around for the better. I lost over 100 pounds, went through several excess skin removal surgeries, and at last, I felt like myself again– even despite the scars.

But then when pregnancy hit, I put on a significant amount of weight again– and it felt like all of my effort and struggle was meaningless. But Yousuf reminds me every day that I’m beautiful beyond the numbers of the weight scale, and my beautiful body was able to bring 3 amazing kids into this planet. Makes me feel so much better about my body.

Right now? It's the constant feeling that I'm not balancing the "creative" part of my work with the "business" part well enough. As a designer, my portfolio is getting good, but I'm deeply insecure about my ability to scale my business without losing the quality or the personal touch that clients pay for.

It sounds ridiculous, but I constantly fear that I'm secretly awful at the networking, the pricing, the contracts—all the administrative stuff. I worry that one day, my poor organization will cause a catastrophic client error, or that I’ll be forced to take on some soulless corporate gig just to pay the rent, meaning I’d have to start designing things I actively hate. It’s the fear of being professionally swallowed up by banality because I’m a better artist than I am a CEO.
